Kamyanets-Podilsky was founded on a strategic site on the Smotrych River in the days of the Rus, colonizing warriors from Scandinavia. It has over two hundred buildings and monuments dating from the 15th to the 19th centuries. Under the medieval Magdeburg Law, its Old Town was divided into different quarters for the various ethnic groups that made up the population; Jews, Ukrainians, Poles and Armenians.
